Putra Heights: Electricity supply and telecommunication link in the areas affected by the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights here are expected to be fully restored this Friday. Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture exco Datuk Ir Izham Hashim stated that Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Telekom Malaysia (TM) have nearly completed their inspections of the supply systems in the severely affected areas, including Persiaran Harmoni and nearby villages.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, assurances have been given by both TNB and TM that services will be fully restored by the end of the week. TNB has completed inspecting outdoor wiring, and electricity will be connected to houses that were slightly affected. As a precaution, property owners are required to perform a ‘load test’ to ensure their electrical systems are safe.
Izham also mentioned ongoing discussions with Petronas aimed at minimizing the incident’s impact on the 8,000 residential and commercial units affected by the gas supply disruption. One proposal includes using tanker lorries for gas delivery.
The daily gas requirements for the area include 9.34 cubic metres, with 5.66 cubic metres needed for four main power stations in the Klang Valley, and 3.68 cubic metres for residential and commercial use, including 300 factories. Some power stations can switch to coal and oil, but others remain on ‘standby’ mode due to their dependence on gas.
The fire, which occurred at 8.10 am last Tuesday, saw flames reaching over 30 metres high and temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius. It took nearly eight hours to extinguish completely. The incident resulted in significant structural damage, with 81 houses completely destroyed, another 81 partially destroyed, 57 affected but not burnt, and 218 houses not affected.
