Pulau Konet Included in Melaka Energy Corridor Plans

Pulau Konet: Pulau Konet has been gazetted as part of the Melaka Energy Corridor (MEC) development project, which aims at expanding the Telok Gong Industrial Area in Alor Gajah. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the gazetting, emphasizing its significance in the broader scope of enhancing industrial activities in the region.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MEC project includes several proposed developments, such as maritime and shipping support industries, oil and gas support industries, and the construction of a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex. Additionally, infrastructure facilities will be developed to bolster industrial growth. A key component of the MEC is a land reclamation concession around Pulau Konet, covering an area of 202.34 hectares.

Responding to a query from Low Chee Leong (PH-Kota Laksamana) about developing Pulau Konet as part of the MEC, Ab Rauf underscored that the island’s development focus would not include tourism. He addressed a question from Datuk Rosli Abdullan (BN-Kuala Linggi) regarding the island’s potential as a tourism product, stating it was unsuitable for such development due to limited coral reefs and the absence of ornamental fish species.

Addressing a supplementary question from Datuk Zaidi Attan (BN-Serkam) concerning the construction of a sovereignty monument on Pulau Konet, Ab Rauf confirmed its completion on September 7, 2022, at the cost of RM80,000. He highlighted that the monument, initiated by the National Security Council (MKN), serves as a symbol of the government’s presence and supervision over the nation’s waters, affirming sovereignty over the country’s islands.
