Proposals for UEC Recognition Must Comply with Constitutional Framework, Says J-KOM Director-General

Kuala lumpur: Any proposals for recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) must align with the Constitution, stated Community Communications Department (J-KOM) director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop. He emphasized the need for those submitting such proposals to have a clear understanding of the nation’s history and the Constitution, which serves as the foundation for unity among all Malaysians.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ismail remarked that any actions proposed should not deviate from the constitutional guidelines, as it serves as the bedrock that unites the nation. His comments came in response to calls for the government to recognise the UEC. He made these remarks while speaking to reporters after officiating the J-KOM MADANI Adopted Village Programme launch at Surau Aziziah, Kampung Sungai Mati.

Ismail further explained that all constitutional provisions, including the status of Islam as the official religion and Bahasa Melayu as the official language, must be respected. He noted that while Islam is the official religion of the Federation, other religions may be practised, and similarly, Bahasa Melayu as the official language allows for the learning of other languages. However, he stressed the importance of staying within these boundaries.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated the need for sensitivity towards religious, ethnic, and racial matters, highlighting the significance of the national language’s position in the country’s Constitution. He affirmed that the principles contained in the Federal Constitution regarding the position of Bahasa Melayu will continue to be upheld and defended.
