Prisons Department To Fully Cooperate With SUHAKAM’s Taiping Prison Riot Report

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Prison Department will fully cooperate with relevant authorities in studying the findings of SUHAKAM's public inquiry into the Taiping Prison riot last year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the department stated that it views every finding, recommendation, and issue in the report with the utmost seriousness, including allegations involving prison management and staff. The department emphasized its commitment to cooperate fully in examining the report thoroughly, in detail, and with integrity to ensure every issue raised receives proper attention.

The statement further highlighted the department's dedication to safety, welfare, rehabilitation, and human rights compliance, in line with legal provisions and established prison management standards. The department urged all parties to refrain from speculation or making premature conclusions that could affect this process and further action by authorities.

Last Monday, SUHAKAM's public inquiry panel released its final findings on the January 17, 2025, Taiping Prison riot, which resulted in the death of an elderly inmate. The panel suggested converting Taiping Prison into a museum, citing its current unsuitability for use as a prison.
