Kuala lumpur: The government will deploy personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to the Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit as an immediate measure to strengthen security controls at airports, stated MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister indicated that these measures were presented by the Home Ministry (KDN) and the Transport Ministry (MOT) at the Cabinet meeting following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot in Indonesia on suspicion of drug smuggling.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Cabinet was informed by KDN and MOT about several immediate improvements that need to be implemented. Fahmi emphasized that the Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit should now include personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police, as it is currently managed by auxiliary police personnel. In addition, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) will be asked to review its background screening and health assessment protocols for pilots and co-pilots following recent incidents.

Furthermore, Fahmi stated that PDRM and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) have been tasked with examining any weaknesses or loopholes in the current security system that could potentially be exploited. These agencies are expected to implement corrective measures promptly. Regarding the possibility of establishing a special investigation team to probe the case, Fahmi mentioned that the government would first study the full report before making any decision.

The media had previously reported the arrest of a 39-year-old Malaysian pilot by Indonesian authorities at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The arrest was on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 25 kilogrammes of drugs. According to the Indonesian National Police (POLRI), inspections uncovered 15 packages containing 70,114 ecstasy and methamphetamine capsules, with an estimated street value of RM45 million based on market prices in Indonesia.
