Kangar: Police have recorded a statement from Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah and seized a shotgun and ammunition as part of investigations into a viral video allegedly showing him shooting a cow.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kangar police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop stated that a report was received from a member of the public at 4.51 pm yesterday concerning the 38-second video. The video purportedly showed Abu Bakar firing at a cow that had run amok at Dataran Lok 9 in Kuala Perlis.
Acting on the report, a team from the Kangar district police headquarters recorded the statement of the Perlis Menteri Besar regarding the incident. Additionally, police seized a shotgun believed to have been used by Abu Bakar, along with nine buckshot cartridges, for further investigation.
Yusharifuddin mentioned that Abu Bakar claimed he acted after the cow went on a rampage, posing a threat to workers and members of the public attending the Kuala Perlis Perdana Korban programme. It was confirmed by the licensing division of the Kangar district police headquarters that Abu Bakar is a licensed firearm holder for the shotgun.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960. This section carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
