Police Receive 261 Reports of Religious Insults Nationwide, Says IGP

Kuala Lumpur: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have registered 261 reports concerning religious insults across the nation, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain announced.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, out of the total, 150 reports were filed against a preacher, 73 reports pertained to a case involving radio presenters, and 38 reports were against two individuals for alleged insults towards Islam in separate videos. The most recent complaint involved a 48-year-old individual from Iskandar Puteri, who reported a preacher’s social media statement that allegedly insulted the Hindu religion.

The complainant alleged that the preacher highlighted differences between incidents involving the radio presenters and the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim near a Hindu temple in Seafield, Selangor in November 2018. The case is being investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The preacher’s statement has been recorded, and the investigation paper is being finalized for referral to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on Tuesday.

Furthermore, the investigation paper concerning the three radio presenters is under review by the AGC after being referred last Thursday. The police are also awaiting profiling information from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding an individual who insulted Islam and is currently believed to be abroad. The individual is suspected to be in Melbourne, Australia, and the authorities are yet to obtain his movement records from the Immigration Department.
