Police Probe Alleged Defamation Against Selangor Islamic Institutions

Shah alam: The police are investigating an individual who is believed to have made defamatory statements against the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) through social media posts. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar stated that this investigation follows a report received on April 16, alleging that the content was created to tarnish the reputations of MAIS and JAIS.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the complainant claimed the video content is defamatory, accusing MAIS and JAIS of corruption and misuse of royal immunity. These accusations appear to be crafted intentionally to damage the institutions' images, said Datuk Shazeli Kahar in an official statement. The case is currently being investigated under sections 500 and 504 of the Penal Code, along with Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The police chief urged the public to refrain from making speculative comments that could disrupt public harmony and order.

Earlier reports indicated that MAIS secretary Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini emphasized the seriousness of a video circulating on TikTok, which allegedly addresses issues of payment arrears and mismanagement tied to a mosque project in Subang. Mohd Sabirin also stressed that the allegations connecting MAIS to the use of royal immunity and corruption, which supposedly resulted in unsettled payments to the complainant, are baseless and defamatory.
