Kuala Lumpur:Police are currently waiting for comprehensive reports from the Chemistry Department and official pathology results to finalize their investigation into the recent death of a man in police custody.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus stated that the cause of death for the local man, who was in his 40s, remains undetermined pending these reports. The Bukit Aman Death in Custody Criminal Investigation Unit (USJKT) is conducting an independent and thorough investigation in collaboration with the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS).
Fadil emphasized that the investigation is being approached from all necessary angles and urged the public to be patient, warning against spreading unverified information that could mislead and cause public concern. He detailed that the man had been detained to assist in investigations related to three separate police reports involving drug-related offences and other crimes.
The deceased had 44 criminal records, including 18 drug-related offences and 26 other criminal activities. He had also confessed to involvement in 17 additional housebreaking and theft cases in the Cheras district. The man was detained following established standard operating procedures but reportedly fell ill while in custody and was taken to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz for treatment, where he was pronounced dead at 1.52 am on October 1.
Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) had previously called for the death to be investigated as a homicide after allegations surfaced that the man had sustained serious injuries while in custody.
