‘Pocket Rocketwoman’ Says Knee Injury Not Serious

Ankara: The knee injury sustained by Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri during the keirin event at the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Track Cycling Nations Cup in Turkiye yesterday is not serious.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nurul Izzah, nicknamed the “Pocket Rocketwoman,” reported that her knee was swollen due to the impact of the crash during the first-round repechage at the Konya Velodrome. She mentioned that although her knee is swollen, she plans to consult with the National Sports Institute (NSI) upon returning to Malaysia. Despite the incident, she reassured that overall, everything is fine.

Earlier, Nurul Izzah shared a post on Instagram with a caption reading ‘Nothing serious,’ accompanied by a video clip of the crash. The incident occurred when she collided with Makaira Wallace while attempting to overtake the Trinidad and Tobago rider. As a result of the crash, Nurul Izzah was classified as Did Not Finish (DNF) after being left lying on the track and unable to continue the race, while Wallace managed to finish third.

The 21-year-old cyclist had to compete in the repechage after finishing fourth in Heat 6 of the first round. On Saturday, Nurul Izzah achieved a significant milestone by breaking her own national record in the women’s sprint at the same competition, clocking in at 10.578 seconds during the qualifying round. This time surpassed her previous record of 10.658 seconds, set at the 2025 Asian Track Cycling Championships in Nilai last month.

The UCI Track Cycling Nations Cup, which commenced on Friday, concluded yesterday.
