KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today received a courtesy call from ASEAN secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn in Putrajaya to discuss preparation and coordination issues ahead of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship next year. Anwar emphasized the crucial role and support of the ASEAN secretariat in ensuring a smooth transition and effective leadership during Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in Malaysia’s readiness to assume the chairmanship. He mentioned that the country’s preparedness is in the final stages and highlighted Malaysia’s priorities during its tenure. These priorities include strengthening regional peace, stability, and prosperity, as well as boosting trade and investment among ASEAN member states. Additionally, Malaysia aims to expand ASEAN economic cooperation and promote inclusive growth and development.
Anwar also shared that discussions with Dr Kao Kim Hourn touched on the progress of the ASEAN Commun
ity Vision 2045 Strategic Plan and other ASEAN-related affairs. The satisfactory progress in drafting the strategic plan signifies a collaborative effort towards a common vision for the region’s future.
The Prime Minister extended a warm welcome to the secretariat team and the entire delegation of ASEAN member states, who will be visiting Malaysia next year. This visit marks an important step in solidifying Malaysia’s role and responsibilities as the ASEAN Chair, and it underscores the country’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration and development.
