PM Anwar Welcomes Immediate Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which took effect at 12 pm, Saturday. In a Facebook posting today, Anwar said the decision to halt fighting and to hold forces in place reflects a shared recognition that restraint is required, primarily in the interest of civilians.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Joint Statement sets out practical and positive measures, including verification by the ASEAN Observer Team and direct communication between defence authorities. Anwar expressed hope that these measures would be faithfully implemented to ensure stability in the region.

He further noted that as Malaysia prepares to hand over the ASEAN Chair to the Philippines at midnight on January 1, 2026, the country will support efforts to honor these commitments and uphold ASEAN's reputation as a region of peace.

The ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand marks an end to the border hostilities that reignited on December 7. The defence ministers from both nations formalized the agreement by signing a Joint Statement during the 3rd Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting held on Saturday morning.
