Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for the immediate execution of seven previously announced initiatives designed to support settlers of the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda), emphasizing the need for timely progress.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar has mandated monthly progress reports on these initiatives, which include support for Felda and housing for new generations, to ensure their timely execution. "We announced the seven items, I have told the (Felda) general manager, I want a progress report every month so that it is not delayed," he stated. He expressed understanding of the settlers' frustrations with delays, noting that progress has been made in completing some second homes.
Anwar made these remarks while speaking at the Santai Perantau Programme, celebrating Felda's 70th anniversary. The event was also attended by Felda chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir. On July 7, during the Felda Settlers' Day and the 70th-anniversary celebrations, the Prime Minister unveiled initiatives aimed at enhancing digital literacy among settlers, allocating RM15.85 million to 317 eligible Felda schemes.
Additionally, RM10 million has been designated for the renovation of 370 primary and secondary schools within Felda areas. Further support includes RM3 million allocated to the Felda MAYA Squad health team. The government is also aiming to amend the Land (Group Settlement Areas) Act 1960 (Act 530), facilitating the construction of multiple housing units on a single lot owned by Felda settlers.
In related developments, Anwar, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, indicated the federal government's willingness to provide financial assistance to State Governments for projects aimed at constructing additional housing units on Felda residential lots. This includes support for essential services such as electricity and water installation. "If there is a problem, I will contact the state government and if there are one or two state governments with financial problems, I will consider it, the Ministry of Finance will study where we can help," he assured.
He further instructed the Felda chairman to engage with the Menteri Besar, Chief Minister, and Premier regarding the policy paper, which is slated to become a policy decision within a month, enabling the construction of second homes in all Felda housing areas.
Regarding the proposed amendment to the Land (Group Settlement Areas) Act 1960, expected to be tabled in Parliament before year-end, Anwar noted that its passage could resolve existing legal challenges. "The initial draft is available and will be presented to the Board of Directors and once approved, I will expedite it for approval by the Cabinet and tabled in Parliament," Anwar explained. He also mentioned that some programs could proceed even before the act's amendment, provided there is agreement from the federal government, Felda management, and no objections from the state government.
