Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today extended his deepest condolences over the passing of Professor John L. Esposito, one of the world's most respected scholars of Islam.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his sentiments in a Facebook post, reflecting on a friendship with Esposito that spanned over five decades, starting from their initial meeting in the early 1970s. Anwar emphasized Esposito's significant contributions as an influential scholar who laid the groundwork for a more profound understanding of Islam in Western societies. He acknowledged Esposito's immense efforts towards fostering Muslim-Christian dialogue.
Anwar also noted Esposito's role as the founder of Georgetown University's Centre for Muslim-Christian Understanding and his collaborative work as a co-author of "Makers of Contemporary Islam." He praised Esposito for his ability to build bridges where others might choose to create barriers between civilizations.
The Prime Minister highlighted Esposito's accessible works, such as 'What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam' and 'Who Speaks for Islam?', which brought academic insights to a broader audience, particularly post-9/11, when such understanding was crucial. Anwar cherished their long-standing relationship, valuing Esposito's wisdom and guidance, and regarded him as both a formidable scholar and a loyal friend.
Anwar described Esposito as generous in private conversations and rigorous in his academic pursuits, appreciating his steadfast support through various challenges. He extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of Malaysia to Esposito's wife, Jean, and to his family, colleagues, and students.
