Ipoh: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has invited Chinese automotive giant Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely) to increase its investment in a bid to develop the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) here. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said AHTV will be an important hub for the regional automotive supply chain as a result of the large investment by national automotive company Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his desire to make AHTV a significant center for Geely and informed its chairman, Li Shufu, about the potential for establishing not just a car manufacturing plant but also a center of excellence for training and education. He conveyed this message during his speech at the launch of Proton’s electric vehicle (EV) factory.
The launch event was attended by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Anwar emphasized the importance of cooperation between the state government and the relevant ministries to ensure successful investments in the AHTV area.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the launch of Proton’s EV factory could reduce EV production costs, thereby enabling the cars to meet the needs of the middle-income group. He mentioned that the product would cater to those with lower income who desire affordable cars with better features.
Anwar also discussed the potential for opening up more opportunities in international markets, including Egypt, South Africa, and Brazil. He shared that during a meeting in Beijing, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly praised Proton Egypt’s performance and noted the popularity of their cars in Egypt.
Efforts are underway for Proton cars to enter the South African and Brazilian markets, and Anwar has communicated this intention to the leadership of both nations. He mentioned that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are expected to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. Anwar has requested Proton to allocate time during the main conference for these leaders and other international delegations to witness Proton’s capabilities, performance, and technology, with the aim of expanding further into export markets.
