Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended Songkran greetings to the Siamese community in Malaysia. He emphasized that the Songkran celebration in Malaysia, particularly in states like Kedah, Perlis, and Kelantan, represents the strengthening of family and community bonds, the beginning of a sacred new year, respect for elders, and the promotion of social unity, all observed with rich customs and traditions.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that the celebration underscores the idea that unity extends beyond mere tolerance, reaching into the realm of recognizing and appreciating each community’s cultural heritage. He acknowledged the Siamese community as an integral part of Malaysia’s national mosaic, contributing significantly to the country’s diverse identity.
Anwar stated that the MADANI government is committed to preserving and celebrating this diversity, encouraging the public to foster mutual understanding and strengthen unity for collective prosperity. Songkran, which marks the traditional New Year for the Thai community and several other Southeast Asian countries, is celebrated by the Siamese community in Malaysia, with the main festivities occurring annually between April 13 and 15.
