PHKL Pioneers Mahjong in Dementia Care Initiative

Kuala Lumpur:Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) organized the World Alzheimer's Month 2026: A Brain Health and Mahjong Day programme to stimulate brain function and raise public awareness of cognitive health.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the event marked PHKL's initiative as the first to incorporate mahjong into a clinical brain health programme. This was achieved through a mix of expert medical discussions, digital cognitive assessments, and interactive social activities.

The programme united leading medical experts, healthcare technology pioneers, and community partners to address issues of cognitive decline, early detection, and holistic dementia care. Dr. Lee Yoong Wah, a consultant geriatrician at PHKL, emphasized that dementia care extends beyond memory problems, involving early detection and holistic support, including home environment adaptations to help patients maintain independence.

Dr. Lee Hwee Ming, a rehabilitation medicine physician at PHKL, noted that core rehabilitation can assist patients in overcoming mobility and spatial awareness difficulties while maintaining their quality of life. On the technological front, Adnan Azam Mohammed, co-founder and CEO of Gray Matter Solutions, highlighted that modern digital tools could transform public perceptions of brain health screening by making assessments more accessible and interactive.

PHKL's collaboration with Gray Matter Solutions and Jom Mahjong Social Club has transformed conventional medical activities into the Mahjong Social Play and Brain Health Challenge. This initiative features 25 interactive gaming tables designed to stimulate neurocognitive functions among participants. Mahjong is increasingly recognized by cognitive health professionals as an ideal mental exercise for older adults, involving strategy, pattern recognition, and working memory.

For those interested in monitoring their cognitive wellbeing, PHKL offers a Memory Screening Package, available through the PHKL Marketing Department or the hospital's website.
