Kuching: Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) has taken a pivotal step towards a potential collaboration with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) by submitting a proposal that outlines various areas of cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof disclosed this development, emphasizing the importance of this strategic partnership.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah elaborated that in the absence of a decision from both parties, further discussions would involve Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. “Petros has submitted the letter (proposal) this week, touching on the way forward for the collaboration. Now, we have to wait for feedback from Petronas. Hopefully, they will come to an agreement on the detailing part,” Fadillah remarked during an event in Kuching.
The negotiations are set to focus on interpreting the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) alongside Sarawak’s Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958. These discussions aim to align the objectives of both companies and streamline efforts in the oil and gas sector.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in a recent Dewan Rakyat briefing, acknowledged Sarawak’s aspirations to expand its presence in the oil and gas industry. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to engaging with the Sarawak Government on potential new projects, emphasizing collaborative efforts between Petros and Petronas across various sectors.
