Petronas’ Turkmenistan Gas Field Deal Highlights International Trust in Malaysia

Bandar cassia: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) success in securing access to one of the world's largest gas fields in Turkmenistan as clear evidence of international confidence in Malaysia's capabilities, political stability, and the professionalism of its local companies.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stated that the agreements signed with the Turkmen government during his visit would allow Malaysia, through Petronas, to engage in significant gas field development in a nation with some of the world's largest gas reserves. He emphasized that this achievement reflects the confidence that other countries have in Malaysia, as well as the peace and unity within the country, and the commitment of companies like Petronas and the dedication of Malaysian professionals.

Anwar further encouraged Malaysians to recognize the vast opportunities available through discipline, commitment, and positive efforts towards national development. He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of MKS Instruments Malaysia at the Bandar Cassia Technology Park.

The agreements were a result of Anwar's two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, which began on June 18, at the invitation of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. This visit reciprocated Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Malaysia in December 2024. It was Anwar's first official visit to Turkmenistan and marked the fifth such visit by a Malaysian prime minister.

Petronas has been operating in Turkmenistan since 1996, establishing a longstanding partnership with the country. Meanwhile, Anwar also welcomed the expansion of global technology companies in Malaysia, especially in Penang, which he noted is increasingly recognized as a major hub for the semiconductor and high-technology industries in the region.
