Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) will undertake a study to develop the Industrial Water Reclamation Policy over at least 12 months to strengthen national water resource management and improve water-use efficiency.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad stated that the study would lay the groundwork for crafting a policy to guide industries such as the food and beverage sector, data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, and public cleaning services. The government's commitment to encouraging the use of reclaimed water aims to enhance water-use efficiency, especially for industrial applications that do not necessitate treated water of drinking quality.

"This approach aligns with the government's objectives to bolster national water supply security through more sustainable and prudent management of water resources," he remarked during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara today. His response addressed Senator Musoddak Ahmad's inquiry regarding the National Water Reclamation Policy's implementation timeline, including necessary infrastructure, state government involvement, and regulatory mechanisms for reclaimed water quality.

The study will encompass technical, legal, financial, and economic analyses, in addition to evaluating infrastructure requirements and reclaimed water quality control mechanisms to ensure the policy's effective execution. To ensure a comprehensive policy, PETRA is also engaging in discussions with stakeholders, including state governments, water operators, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and industry players.
