Sarawak: A total of 15 flood mitigation projects are currently being implemented in Sarawak, involving a total cost of RM3.39 billion. The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) stated that these projects, executed by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), are part of the initiatives under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, of the 15 projects, five are at the pre-implementation stage, three are under implementation, while seven have been fully completed. Under the 12MP, a total of 453 river conservation works have been finalized at a cost of RM50.9 million, focusing on increasing river flow capacity and stabilizing riverbanks to mitigate flood risks in the affected areas.
Additionally, 548 emergency projects were executed at a cost of RM45.3 million, targeting river infrastructure damage and reducing flood risks in vulnerable regions. PETRA highlighted that the floods reported on March 10 in several areas in Sarawak, including Kuching and Lundu, were attributed to significant heavy rainfall.
The floods impacted several identified locations, notably flood hotspot areas such as Kampung Sebat Melayu, Kampung Segong, and Kampung Sileng Melayu, underscoring the need for comprehensive flood mitigation strategies.
