Perodua Unveils Its First EV with RM800 Million Development Investment

Kuala lumpur: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) today launched its inaugural battery electric vehicle (EV), the QV-E, priced at RM80,000, excluding insurance and battery costs, marking a significant step towards a sustainable EV ecosystem.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the QV-E, which stands for ‘Quest for Visionary Electric Vehicle,’ was developed at a cost of RM800 million, utilizing the expertise of over 100 local specialists. Under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, Perodua was designated as the leader among local automotive manufacturers to spearhead the EV ecosystem.

Anwar expressed his initial apprehension regarding the ambitious goal set for Perodua, but praised the successful launch as a testament to the dedication and skill of local talent. He emphasized that, through determination and cooperation, Malaysians could elevate the nation’s standing in industrial and technological sectors.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the support of the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI) and its positive approach towards achieving the national aspirations of the MADANI nation. He noted the challenges posed by foreign reluctance in technology transfer, but affirmed Perodua’s capability to leverage domestic strengths in collaboration with local universities and scientists.

Anwar reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting the national automotive industry, pledging to support Perodua’s expansion efforts during official international engagements.

Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad stated that 52 Malaysian companies have already supplied components for the QV-E, with plans to increase to 70 vendors by 2030. Produced at Perodua’s Smart Mobility Plant, the QV-E’s manufacturing capacity is set to increase from 500 units to 3,000 units per month by the third quarter of 2026.

Zainal Abidin highlighted the collaboration with local universities to advance skills in electric power systems and battery technology. The QV-E, designed with modern functionality and safety features, targets middle-income earners seeking a second or replacement vehicle.

Perodua introduces a ‘Battery as a Service’ leasing concept, offering a lifetime battery guarantee separate from the car’s body to alleviate customer concerns about battery ownership. The QV-E is available in Ice Blue and Caviar Grey at selected Perodua outlets.
