Perodua Unveils First Malaysian-Made Electric Vehicle by Month’s End

Kuala lumpur: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is set to launch its inaugural electric vehicle (EV) at the end of this month, fulfilling national requirements, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The initiative marks a significant milestone in the nation’s automotive industry.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, emphasized that the introduction of Perodua’s fully Malaysian-made EV aligns with the national agenda. He highlighted that the vehicle would be affordable, compliant with national standards, and poised to boost economic growth. Speaking during an engagement session with Perodua staff, Anwar underscored the launch as a testament to the strength of domestic research and development and the skilled local workforce.

The Prime Minister further remarked that the EV launch showcases Perodua’s robust R and D capabilities and their disciplined management and governance practices. He assured that the MADANI Government, along with Malaysians, would extend full support to Perodua in this endeavor.

Earlier, Perodua’s president and CEO, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, addressed the company’s achievements, noting the production of 5.5 million vehicles over its 32-year history. He shared that the company has invested RM13.4 billion since its inception in 1993 and is gearing up to face future challenges by investing in EV models.

In previous reports from May, it was mentioned that the initial stage of production for the first EV would involve over 30 percent local assembly at Perodua’s new factory in Rawang, with a price tag under RM80,000. The company plans an initial production run of 500 units per month, targeting young buyers and small families seeking an affordable EV driving experience.
