Perlis: The Perlis government plans to strengthen religious-based programmes as part of efforts to address social issues, particularly drug and alcohol addiction problems in the state. Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli stated that Perlis ranks as the third state on the list for high drug abuse rates, based on population ratios. He emphasised that a proactive approach is necessary to address this pressing issue.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Shukri highlighted the importance of not ignoring the situation. He noted the significant number of addicts in the state and stressed the need for proactive measures. While acknowledging that these efforts may not completely solve the issue, he expressed hope that increased religious awareness could help mitigate social problems.
Mohd Shukri made these comments while winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address at the state assembly sitting. He also reiterated that electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vapes had been banned by the Perlis Fatwa Committee and urged the public to abandon their use, citing potential links to drug abuse.
He pointed out that using vapes is considered haram (forbidden) and therefore sinful. The decision to ban vapes follows two incidents involving students: one where a Form Two student was injured after reportedly experiencing hallucinations from vaping, and another where a Form Three student suffered a seizure after smoking a vape in a school toilet. The state assembly sitting was adjourned sine die.
