Padang besar: The construction of the Perlis Malaysia Sports School in Bukit Chabang, Padang Besar, which has been stalled since 2013, is expected to reach completion by January 2027. Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, announced that the project's first phase is currently between 85 and 90 percent completed, indicating it is on track.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shamsul Azri expressed confidence in the project's progress following a survey of the site, which showed that previous issues such as manpower shortages and contractor problems have been resolved. During the Iltizam 2026 Convention at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), he assured that the first phase of construction could be finalized by January 2027.
In an effort to prevent further delays, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously mandated in April that the project be transferred to a competent government-owned company. This measure was taken to ensure the timely completion of the sports school.
At the convention, Shamsul Azri also discussed the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Act 2025 (Act 867), which was gazetted on May 22, 2025, and enforced from December 1, 2025. This act is designed to streamline bureaucratic processes and enhance the efficiency of the government service delivery system. He emphasized that this act is a legal instrument that reinforces trust in the country's administrative system.
Highlighting the government's focus on improving efficiency, Shamsul Azri noted that since the implementation of the Bureaucratic Red-Tape Reform (RKB) under the Public Service Reform Agenda (ARPA) in 2024, a total of 439 projects have been completed, resulting in compliance cost savings of RM2.95 billion for the public and businesses. This initiative supports the government's aim to boost public sector productivity and create a more conducive environment for business and investment.
In addressing the role of civil servants in politics, Shamsul Azri reiterated that regulations prohibit their involvement in political activities. He confirmed that no complaints have been received in this regard, and assured that the government would respond appropriately if issues arise.
