Perak Considers Stricter Hiking Rules After Recent Cases

Taiping: The Perak state government will review and consider tightening standard operating procedures (SOPs) for hiking and forest-entry activities in the state to enhance visitor safety. State Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim said stricter measures could be introduced if deemed necessary following a review of the effectiveness of existing SOPs. He emphasized the importance of compliance and cooperation from hikers to ensure safety.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Teh stated that the SOPs are in place to safeguard hikers and ensure their safety, not because of the registration fees imposed. Registration helps authorities keep track of hikers, including their entry times and numbers. He expressed hope that recent incidents would encourage the public to appreciate the importance of SOPs and cooperate fully for their own safety.

Teh highlighted the inherent risks of hiking and forest activities, stressing the need for individuals to take responsibility for their safety by adhering to regulations. He mentioned the possibility of introducing stricter requirements if weaknesses in the current SOPs are identified. For instance, access to forest areas may be restricted under unfavourable weather conditions, contingent on cooperation from everyone involved.

His remarks come amid the ongoing search for Jaslinda Saludin, 49, who has been missing for more than a week on Gunung Batu Putih near Tapah. The incident coincides with the recent death of 19-year-old Nur Izzati Humaira Azizul, who was found dead after losing her way while descending Bukit Asa in Hulu Selangor.

Meanwhile, at the Toyo Tires Charity Run 2026 event, Toyo Tyre Malaysia (TTM) Sdn Bhd president and managing director Mike Toh announced that 1,833 participants, including corporate partners, volunteers, and community members, took part. The event highlighted growing support for corporate social responsibility and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives in Taiping.

Toh stated that TTM is committed to creating sustainable value for society, promoting healthy lifestyles, and enhancing community engagement. This year, Toyo Tyre Malaysia fully sponsored the programme, investing RM170,000, which included RM50,000 in contributions to selected charitable organisations. Additionally, lucky draw prizes worth RM20,000 were offered to participants in appreciation of their support.
