Penang Welcomes New Direct Flight From Another City In China In Q2 2025

Penang: Penang will welcome a new direct flight route from another major city in China, which is expected to commence during China’s May Day Golden Week travel peak, according to Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong stated that the new route will enhance connectivity between Penang and China’s market, facilitating tourism, business exchanges, and cultural interactions. It will also reinforce Penang’s position as a regional aviation hub and international tourism destination. The decision was reached after Penang Global Tourism’s interactions with the Chinese airline during the Routes Asia 2024 Forum and subsequent video conferences.

The new flight route awaits approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), after which the airline will announce further details. Currently, Penang has direct flights from seven Chinese cities, and the upcoming addition will be the eighth, marking a significant expansion of air connectivity between Penang and China.

Additionally, Wong shared that February 2025 data indicates a 118.03% increase in Chinese tourists arriving in Penang compared to the previous year, with numbers reaching 33,151. This growth positions China as Penang’s second-largest international tourist market, surpassing Singapore and following Indonesia.

Penang is also set to introduce a new direct flight route from Yangon, Myanmar, on April 10 through Myanmar Airways International, enhancing its regional aviation network. However, the Penang international flight network faces adjustments due to AirAsia’s recent announcement to suspend eight routes, including the direct flight to Hong Kong from April 12.

The Hong Kong-Penang route, previously operated by AirAsia and Cathay Pacific, saw a significant increase in flights throughout 2024, with Hong Kong Express Airways joining the route. As of January 2025, the route’s frequency increased to 22 flights per week, indicating a competitive market and resulting in AirAsia’s strategic route adjustments.
