Penang:The state will receive its inaugural winter charter flight from Poland on November 5, marking a pivotal move in Penang's strategy to diversify its international tourism markets and establish a presence in Europe.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Warsaw-Penang winter charter service is operated by a travel agency and LOT Polish Airlines. The service will run until March 25, 2027, with weekly departures every Thursday from Warsaw Chopin Airport to Penang International Airport.
A total of 19 flights are planned for the winter season, each accommodating between 250 to 300 passengers. In conjunction with the flights, the travel agency has developed eight tourism packages tailored for Polish travelers. These packages offer an immersive experience of Penang's culture, history, and natural attractions, guided by local tour experts.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai held a meeting on October 1 with representatives from the travel agency and the destination management company to finalize preparations for the charter service. Wong highlighted that these packages cater to Polish tourists' winter holiday preferences, offering seven- or 14-day stays that combine city tours with beach relaxation.
Wong emphasized that this initiative is expected to enhance Penang's international air connectivity and act as a gateway for the state's tourism industry to engage with the European market. The charter service is seen as a stepping stone towards a more robust presence in Europe.
Winter charter flights present an effective method for connecting Penang with long-haul markets, adapting to seasonal travel trends, and utilizing existing tourism packages provided by operators. Wong noted that these charters could open new markets, bring in fresh visitor sources, and lay the groundwork for potential long-term air connectivity. The Warsaw-Penang charter is viewed as the beginning of a promising exploration in developing European long-haul markets for Penang's tourism industry.
