Penang Water Supply Disruption to Affect Over 300,000 Residents

Penang: Over 300,000 residents in Penang will face one of the largest scheduled water supply disruptions of the year from April 25 to 28. A total of 341,708 users across five districts will be affected by this disruption.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the disruption is necessary for the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) to undertake 23 pipeline installation projects and other essential works, with a total cost of RM25 million. These projects aim to enhance water supply, improve water pressure, stabilize supply, and ensure quicker recovery during future disruptions.

The disruption will involve a partial shutdown of the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant. Scheduled from April 25 to April 28, the shutdown will last up to 60 hours. However, Chow assured that PBAPP intends to restore 88 percent of the water supply for 300,185 of the affected accounts within 48 hours.

The PBAPP chairman urged residents to store sufficient water for up to 60 hours, depending on their location. The physical works are expected to last 18 hours and involve 800 personnel. PBAPP CEO Datuk K. Pathmanathan highlighted that the main focus will be on the final connection works for the new Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline at Ampang Jajar, valued at RM8.7 million.

Additionally, PBAPP will implement seven other projects at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant during the disruption to optimize water supply. These works include upgrades and maintenance of pumping operations, pipeline repairs, and valve replacements. Water supply restoration will occur in phases, with varying timelines for different regions.
