Penang to Collaborate on Establishing NICE for Ageing Population

Penang:The state is set to collaborate with the federal government on establishing the National Integrated Care Centres of Excellence (NICE) to address the needs of an ageing population.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that the state government would cooperate with the implementation of this initiative, as announced in Budget 2027. The effort aims to provide training, research, and care facilities for the elderly in Penang.

The State Economic Planning Division (BPEN) is tasked with liaising with relevant ministries to gather details about the development, as specific information on its location and implementation in Penang is not yet available. Chow expressed the state's support for establishing the facility, emphasizing its importance in preparing for the demographic shift.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Budget 2027 announcement included plans for two NICE facilities in Penang and Sarawak. These centers are part of a broader strategy to meet the growing needs of senior citizens, requiring comprehensive policies and programs.

Chow highlighted the necessity for targeted policies and collaboration among the state government, private sector, and community to effectively address the challenges associated with an ageing population. This includes developing infrastructure, care homes, awareness programs, and welfare support.

Additionally, Chow mentioned the need for further information on the proposed 122-acre NCT InnoSphere development, which involves Penang and Kulim, Kedah. This project, also announced in Budget 2027, aims to create a hub for heavy vehicle, engineering, maintenance, and logistics to bolster industries in the region and support the Special Border Economic Zone (SBEZ).
