Penang: Penang is poised to benefit from a spillover of international events relocated from the Middle East due to the ongoing crisis in the region, according to Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer G.Ashwin. He said more than 20 events have been shortlisted for Penang, with the number expected to grow as the bidding process is still ongoing.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ashwin noted that there are specific procedures for relocation, including identifying subject matter experts and local hosts in Penang to lead the events before they can be facilitated. He shared this information with reporters after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PCEB and Marriott International Malaysia.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow witnessed the signing ceremony, which was formalised by Ashwin and the Marriot Business Council Malaysia, Northern Region and Marriot Charity Golf Tournament chairman Datuk Gulab Mahatam Rai, to jointly promote the Penang Golf Challenge as an annual business and networking platform.
Ashwin pointed out that many events originally scheduled in the Middle East are now shifting to the Asia-Pacific region, positioning Penang as a strategic and attractive host destination. The shortlisted events mainly involve sectors such as financial institutions, management, and the medical field, with some expected to attract more than 1,000 participants.
Ashwin mentioned that the list will be finalised and officially announced once the formalisation process is completed, noting that some of these events also extend into 2027, 2028, and beyond. "Penang's events calendar is already secured as far ahead as 2032, reflecting the state's long-term planning in attracting international conferences and events," he said.
Earlier, the MoU signing ceremony marked an important step forward in strengthening Penang's position as a premier destination for business events, corporate engagement, and industry networking. The Penang Golf Challenge is expected to evolve into an annual signature initiative that not only enhances business networking opportunities but also further positions Penang as a dynamic destination for business events and corporate engagement.
