Penang STEM Talent Project Receives RM12 Million Boost to Train 100,000 Students by 2030

Penang: The Economy Ministry has announced a significant allocation of RM12 million over the next four years to implement a groundbreaking STEM Talent Pilot Project in Penang. This ambitious initiative aims to engage and train 100,000 students by 2030 in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir revealed that the project represents a collaboration between the Economy Ministry, the Penang government, and industry players. It is designed to bolster local talent development in alignment with the requirements of high-tech industries. The allocated funds will support four core pillars: STEM education for the younger generation, Math Quest, AI on Wheels, and Technical Skill Learning, with a focus on reaching students from rural schools and low-income communities.

The initiative is crucial for broadening opportunities and fostering practical skills in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), data science, robotics, and digital technology, thus paving the way for students to pursue high-value careers. Akmal Nasrullah shared these insights with reporters during the launch of Penang's STEM Talent Pilot Project at Tech Dome Penang, an event also graced by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Penang was chosen as the pilot location due to its robust industrial ecosystem, particularly in the electrical and electronics (E and E), semiconductor, and high-tech manufacturing sectors. The state's STEM Talent Blueprint, set to be introduced in 2024, further supports this choice. Akmal Nasrullah emphasized the importance of early talent development, starting from primary and secondary school levels, and extending through higher education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and industry training.

The success of this pilot project is expected to not only meet Penang's industrial needs but also serve as a model for talent development across other states, ultimately supporting Malaysia's economic agenda. The country anticipates a need for nearly 60,000 highly skilled engineers to advance its semiconductor industry from back-end to front-end activities.

The minister urged participating companies and industry players to transcend module-based STEM programmes by providing students with direct industry exposure. This could include facility visits to showcase the latest technologies and encouraging engineers and experts to share their experiences in schools.

Akmal Nasrullah stressed the importance of moving beyond template-driven programmes to ensure that the inspiration provided is not limited. He called on companies to take an active role in human capital development, thereby enhancing the STEM talent pool in Penang.
