Penang Reinforces Its Economic Resilience Amid Global Trade Challenges – Chow Kon Yeow

Penang: Penang has reaffirmed its commitment to resilience, innovation, and maintaining global competitiveness amid the tense global trading environment, as stated by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2025, Chow emphasized that Penang remains open for business, innovation, and collaboration, highlighting the state’s historical commitment to resilience. He noted that Penang’s economy is tightly integrated into global supply chains, particularly in sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, precision tools, and medical devices.

Chow underscored that Penang’s adaptability is essential when global shifts occur, affecting areas like Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan just as much as regions like Shanghai and San Jose. He stressed the importance of finding opportunities amid challenges, stating, “We must look for silver linings, not all is doom and gloom.”

The Chief Minister also mentioned that multinational firms are reassessing their regional presence, with many considering relocation to politically stable, efficient, and transparent ecosystems, making Penang an attractive option due to its robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment.

Chow praised Malaysia’s proactive diplomatic efforts, highlighting indications that tariffs on Malaysian goods might be capped at 10 percent, significantly lower than the feared 24 percent or more by US President Donald Trump. He commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for taking a direct and decisive approach, including proposing a US-ASEAN Special Summit, showcasing Malaysia’s leadership in shaping regional trade outcomes.

The luncheon was attended by MICCI Northern Branch chairman Datuk Brian Tan Guan Hooi, along with 200 attendees from various industries and related sectors.
