Penang Government Cracks Down on Unauthorized Land Activities in Padi Areas

Penang:The Penang state government is taking firm action against any unauthorized land reclamation, development, or sale of land in padi-growing areas, which are deemed crucial for the state's food security.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Rashidi Zinol, chairman of the State Rural Development, Agrotechnology and Food Security, and Entrepreneurship Committee, announced that the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) is currently enforcing legal measures against illegal earthworks.

Offenses related to unauthorized land activities can lead to penalties under Section 19(1) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 (Act 172), punishable by fines of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both. Datuk Rashidi also cautioned the public against being misled by offers to purchase padi land lots without proper planning approval and urged them to verify with authorities before proceeding with any transactions.

Padi-growing areas are highlighted not only as agricultural land but as vital sources of livelihood for farmers and essential to maintaining the food supply for the population.
