Penang Defers to MACC for Investigation into Senior Official’s Alleged Misconduct

Penang: The Penang state government has decided to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to lead the investigation into allegations of power abuse by a senior state official.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that the MACC has commenced investigations and emphasized that the state government would refrain from conducting its own internal inquiry. Chow stated, "Since the MACC has begun its investigation, the state government will leave the matter entirely to the commission to carry out its duties independently, as we are not investigators, but we will provide full cooperation."

The investigation by the Penang MACC was initiated following reports concerning the alleged misuse of zakat funds for land acquisition by a senior state government official. This issue was first highlighted by a state assemblyman during a legislative assembly session towards the end of last year.

Reports indicate that the MACC's investigative team has visited several offices to gather necessary documents and has recorded statements from two individuals believed to be connected to the case. Chow mentioned that this matter was addressed during the Penang State Legislative Assembly sitting in November last year, and the explanations provided at that time were considered satisfactory. However, recent developments have led to the MACC's current official investigation.

Chow also mentioned that the senior official in question continues to perform his duties while the investigation is ongoing. He noted that there has been no need for the state government to seek further explanations from the official, as the previous clarifications were deemed adequate.
