Shah alam: The Alumni Federation of Universiti Teknologi MARA (PAUiTM) has proposed that the university be granted Royal University status, in recognition of its significant role and contributions to the nation since its establishment.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposal was in line with the royal address by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who is also UiTM Pro-Chancellor. During the First Session of the 104th UiTM Convocation Ceremony, she described the public university as a 'Royal University'. PAUiTM believes that it is highly appropriate for UiTM to be proclaimed a Royal University, emphasizing the institution's special position and the trust placed in it within the country's higher education landscape.
The proposal draws upon Article 1(A) of the Universiti Teknologi MARA Act 1976 (Act 173), which establishes the university in accordance with Article 153 of the Federal Constitution. PAUiTM stressed the importance of protecting UiTM against efforts that could undermine its original purpose, as highlighted by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor.
PAUiTM expressed gratitude for the Tengku Permaisuri's address at the convocation, which conveyed significant messages and values for university staff and alumni. The address highlighted UiTM's role in empowering the education of Malays, Orang Asli, and natives of Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the Federal Constitution and Act 173.
The address also emphasized preserving harmony in a plural society and respecting cultural diversity, ensuring that the legitimate interests of all races are protected according to constitutional provisions. While UiTM focuses on Bumiputera empowerment, it has produced competent professionals across various disciplines and sectors, showcasing its ability to produce high-quality graduates.
PAUiTM welcomed Her Royal Highness' emphasis on the importance of knowledge, competitiveness, and readiness among the younger generation in facing geopolitical challenges, global economic changes, and rapid technological advancements. The alumni federation remains committed to strengthening alumni networks, contributing expertise, and safeguarding UiTM's legacy as a bastion of knowledge and a catalyst for national development.
