Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Parliament Open Day 2026 is being hailed as a crucial initiative to engage youth with the country's democratic institutions, offering them a chance to understand parliamentary debates and the functions of Parliament firsthand. Bentong Member of Parliament Young Syefura Othman emphasized the event's significance, highlighting the opportunity it provides for young people to gain exposure to the democratic system and the role of Parliament.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Young Syefura stressed the importance of youth participation, noting that they are not only future leaders but also current leaders who should be equipped with the necessary experience to comprehend the workings of democratic institutions. During her appearance on Bernama TV's Darah Muda programme, she stated, "They are the leaders. People always say they are future leaders, but to me, they are leaders of today and the future."

Young Syefura pointed out that the Youth Parliament offers young individuals a platform to engage in parliamentary activities directly, including debates on pressing issues such as housing, education, healthcare, and employment. The Parliament Open Day also aims to make Parliament more accessible to people from all backgrounds, providing an opportunity to witness the democratic system in action.

This year's event is being held on a large scale, featuring approximately 40 exhibitions by government agencies and the private sector. Activities include robotics exhibitions, virtual reality experiences, local film screenings, e-sports, futsal, electronic games, a blood donation campaign, and tours of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.

Visitors will have the chance to learn about the roles of Members of Parliament, the Speaker, and parliamentary staff through organized tours. Young Syefura highlighted the importance of engaging those aged 18 to 30, encouraging them to participate in the Youth Parliament and share their views on issues affecting their lives.

She also encouraged young people to utilize social media to express their opinions in an informed and constructive manner, as their voices can contribute to improving government policies and services. The Malaysian Parliament Open Day 2026, running from 9 am to 5 pm, features segments titled Our Parliament, Serving the People, and Developing Malaysia, with an expected attendance of over 10,000 visitors over the two-day event.
