Parents Urged to Control and Monitor Children’s Internet Use to Combat Cybercrime

Kuala lumpur: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged parents to take an active role in controlling and monitoring their children's internet use to protect them from the growing threat of cybercrime. Fahmi emphasized the importance of parental involvement, especially for children under 16 who are at significant risk of becoming victims of online exploitation, fraud, and harassment.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi highlighted that the responsibility for managing digital device usage lies with parents, as they are the ones purchasing smartphones, tablets, and internet subscriptions. Speaking at the launch of the Safer Internet Day 2026, organized by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), he insisted that parents should set safety restrictions and limit the time children spend on digital devices, rather than using them as "babysitters."

Fahmi shared his personal experience, revealing that he imposes a time limit on his 13-year-old child's use of digital games. He believes that teaching children about moderation and setting boundaries is crucial, as excessive use of the internet can negatively impact their education.

Addressing reporters, Fahmi explained that this year's Safe Internet Campaign emphasizes internet safety messages under parental controls. The campaign focuses on the importance of limiting device usage time and monitoring video game play.

To enhance community awareness of internet safety, Fahmi announced that 150 individuals from diverse backgrounds have been appointed to disseminate the latest information to their communities. These individuals will provide updates on new scams, scammers' tactics, and other relevant internet safety issues.
