KUALA LUMPUR: Parents, teachers, and students must remain vigilant for warning signs of distress and proactively offer empathetic support to those who may be contemplating suicide. Befrienders KL Patron Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for individuals to express their emotional pain and encouraged them to seek help from school counselors or trusted adults.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee expressed concern over the recent tragic deaths of teenagers, including school students, highlighting the immense stress that young individuals face in today’s world. He pointed out that schoolchildren experience significant stress from various sources, including academic and peer pressure, relationship issues, bullying, and high expectations from parents, teachers, and themselves. This burden can severely impact mental health and potentially lead to suicide.
Lee outlined several warning signs to watch for, such as discussions or social media posts about dying, feelings of hopele
ssness and helplessness, withdrawal from friends and family, and a sudden decline in academic performance. Other indicators include losing interest in activities they once enjoyed, neglecting personal appearance, significant changes in eating and sleeping patterns, and saying goodbye or giving away prized possessions.
He underscored the necessity of sharing helpline contacts, like Befrienders KL and Talian HEAL, which provide safe, judgment-free environments for individuals to seek anonymous support. Lee urged people to remain attentive to those who might be struggling mentally and encouraged individuals facing difficulties to reach out to someone they trust or to contact a helpline.
