KUALA LUMPUR: Parents or guardians of children associated with GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) have been assured that they need not fear meeting with the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to verify their biological relationship with the children. Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri emphasized that JKM would only take action, such as arresting parents or guardians, if they have a criminal record with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri highlighted the department’s understanding of the concerns some parents have about coming forward. She noted, “We are aware that some parents do not dare to respond or come to us early (to prove their biological relationship with the child), for fear of being arrested and having to pay lawyer fees.” The minister reassured parents that they could contact JKM directly without a lawyer, as the primary concern is the well-being of the children, 140 of whom are still waiting to be reunited with
their families.

During a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara, Nancy was responding to Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin’s inquiry regarding the time required for the children’s mental health recovery before they can return to their families. She reported that out of the 560 children rescued through Op Global, 420 have been reunited with their families, with an additional four placed with qualified and suitable individuals.

Since the commencement of Op Global Phase 1 in early September, authorities have arrested 415 individuals, including top officials from GISBH, and rescued 625 victims ranging from two months to 28 years old. However, after further investigation, it was determined that only 560 victims were involved, all of whom are currently under JKM’s temporary custody.
