Parental Awareness On Children’s Internet Use Still Low In Perlis

Arau: Awareness among parents in Perlis regarding the importance of controlling and monitoring internet use, including social media, among underage children remains low. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perlis Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission director Norrazlina Nordin stated that the commission is engaging Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and students in the Safe Internet Campaign to raise awareness. She noted that the campaign is aimed not only at students but also at parents, many of whom are unsure of what their children are watching online. Emphasizing the need for parental controls, Norrazlina highlighted that parents can regulate internet usage through mobile phones or home WiFi settings. Norrazlina explained that many parents tend to give gadgets to young children to keep them quiet. The campaign seeks to inform parents that gadgets should not serve as a 'babysitter.' The initiative also offers parents guidance on age-appropriate online content to help them better supervise the ir children's internet activities. She further mentioned that Perlis MCMC conducted the Safe Internet Campaign in schools under the Perlis Education Department last year, with this year's focus on evaluating its impact on the target groups. Additionally, MCMC plans to visit schools across the state in collaboration with appointed icons and the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) to conduct activities with students, promoting safer internet usage.
