Kota kinabalu: Papar district representative, Gelvia Vanessa Jenny, 24, was crowned 2026 Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan during the highlight of the state-level Kaamatan Festival celebration at Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA)'s Hongkod Koisaan here tonight. She proved lucky when she was announced as the winner, successfully surpassing 52 other contestants after being selected among the final seven finalists in the competition.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Gelvia Vanessa received a trophy, RM15,000 in cash and various prizes presented by Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, wife of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah, witnessed by Datin Seri Julia Salag, the Chief Minister's wife, and Datin Seri Linda Ewit, wife of the Deputy Chief Minister I. Speaking to reporters, Gelvia Vanessa said she had begun training in February in preparation for the competition.
The third of eight siblings said this was the second time she joined the Unduk Ngadau pageant, and that the prayers of her family as well as her desire to interact with the public ultimately led to her success. 'I feel touched and extremely grateful. There are so many emotions that I cannot describe, but above all, I am thankful and happy,' she said, adding that her father is a rubber tapper while her mother works as a security guard.
At the climax of the event, Gelvia Vanessa showcased the traditional Kadazan Papar attire known as 'sia do binokian.' The Unduk Ngadau pageant is a cultural beauty competition that highlights the heritage and traditions of Sabah's diverse ethnic communities in remembrance of the sacrifice of the legendary Huminodun for the well-being of her people.
Second place was won by Juje Elor, representing Tuaran district, who took home a trophy, RM12,000 in cash and additional prizes, while Criszelbellkah Lorris, representing Matunggong district, finished third and received a trophy, RM10,000 in cash and accompanying prizes.
Earlier, the Kaamatan Festival 2026 was officially closed by Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman through the mengomot (rice harvesting) ceremony and the striking of a gong seven times at the event, which was also attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
