Pak Lah Remembered as a Gracious Leader and Statesman with Lasting Impact: Anwar

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has been remembered as a statesman who reshaped the country’s political landscape and demonstrated a spirit of generosity and grace, according to current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his sorrow in a Facebook post over Abdullah’s passing, referring to him as both a friend and a man of substantial character. Anwar recounted his last visit with Abdullah, noting the warmth and calm that still shone through despite Abdullah’s frail condition.

Anwar highlighted Abdullah’s stabilizing presence amidst political turbulence, describing him as a figure who, despite political differences, extended courtesy and kindness. Anwar praised Abdullah for his legacy of promoting Islam Hadhari, a progressive approach integrating Islamic principles with development and governance.

Under Abdullah’s leadership, Anwar noted, Malaysia experienced significant judicial reforms, increased administrative transparency, and strengthened institutions. He also credited Abdullah with facilitating public discourse, media freedom, and aligning with the Ninth Malaysia Plan to drive economic growth and development.

Anwar reminisced about Abdullah’s leadership style, characterized by composure and peace, even in challenging situations. He shared personal anecdotes of Abdullah’s supportive nature during Anwar’s own difficult times, emphasizing Abdullah’s peaceful demeanor and refusal to retaliate harshly.

Anwar extended his condolences to Abdullah’s wife, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, and their family, acknowledging the national mourning of a humble and principled leader. He expressed gratitude for Abdullah’s service, hoping for eternal peace and paradise for the late statesman.
