Kuantan: The Pahang government has been urged to provide rental assistance to residents of Block C at the Puncak Arabella Apartments in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, who are affected by a recent landslide incident near their homes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ho Chi Yang (PH-Tanah Rata) highlighted that nine families, comprising 39 individuals, remain at a temporary evacuation center. Ho emphasized the need for rental assistance while residents await the completion of slope repair works. He presented this appeal during the Pahang Budget 2026 debate at the State Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang.
Earlier reports from the Cameron Highlands District Disaster Management Committee indicated that 24 housing units, housing 91 residents from Block C, were evacuated to the temporary shelter at Puncak Arabella Hall due to safety concerns. Ho also pointed out the necessity of expanding landslide early warning systems in residential areas of Cameron Highlands, urging federal or state government allocations for local authorities to implement such systems in high-risk areas.
In the same debate, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Johari Hussain (BN-Tioman) called for immediate state intervention to tackle severe coastal erosion caused by strong waves in Kampung Kuala Pontian. He reported that the erosion endangered residents and damaged infrastructure, including 10 chalets, two houses, and a restaurant. Johari urged authorities to consider funding between RM500,000 and RM1 million for a wave-retaining wall or another protective structure. The assembly sitting is set to continue tomorrow.
