Over 4,800 Kg Of Food Saved From Ramadan Bazaars In Negeri Sembilan Last Year

Negeri Sembilan: The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) successfully saved 4,872.36 kilogrammes (kg) of surplus food valued at RM53,595 from various Ramadan bazaars in Negeri Sembilan through the MYSaveFood campaign last year. This initiative demonstrated a significant increase compared to the previous year’s total of 4,547.10 kg, equivalent to RM50,279, marking substantial progress in food recovery efforts.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the chairman of the State Local Government Development, Housing and Transport Committee, J. Arul Kumar, emphasized that the programme not only provided free unsold food and drinks to those in need but also effectively reduced the amount of food waste directed to landfill sites. He described the programme as a strategic initiative aimed at preventing food wastage by salvaging excess food and beverages from Ramadan bazaars across the state.

The collected unsold food was distributed to students, welfare homes, mosques, suraus for moreh meals, and the homeless. The Nilai assemblyman expressed the goal of increasing the salvaged food amount to 5,000 kg this year, attributing this ambition to a rise in the number of participating vendors. He noted the overwhelming support from bazaar traders who have been cooperative in donating their surplus food.

The MYSaveFood campaign, managed by SWCorp in collaboration with Pemuda GEMA Negeri Sembilan, is now in its sixth year. This year, the 10-day campaign will be conducted at six Ramadan bazaars, including one in Bandar Baru Nilai.
