Over 27,000 Imported Cattle Cleared for Aidiladha Rituals

Padang besar: More than 27,000 cattle have been imported to meet the demand for the upcoming Aidiladha celebration. These livestock have undergone strict screening and quarantine procedures by the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MAQIS deputy director-general Dr. Azhari Sharidan Abu Bakar confirmed that the cattle, primarily sourced from Thailand, have been certified as disease-free and safe for the Qurban ritual. They have been closely monitored during a 14-day quarantine period to detect any signs of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD).

Dr. Azhari Sharidan further revealed that approximately 1,000 buffaloes have also been imported in preparation for the Hari Raya Haji celebrations. Stressing the importance of health and safety, he urged all livestock importers to adhere strictly to MAQIS regulations. This includes ensuring all animals pass through MAQIS screening to prevent animal diseases from affecting public health.

He mentioned that importers have the option to house their cattle in private quarantine facilities approved by MAQIS, in addition to government-run stations. MAQIS officers conduct regular monitoring of these animals. In cases where government facilities reach capacity, livestock may be kept in private or importer-owned premises, provided they secure prior approval from MAQIS and meet all necessary conditions.

Dr. Azhari Sharidan acknowledged instances of non-compliance, where cattle were prematurely sold before completing the required quarantine period. He noted that one case was recorded last year and two the previous year, and reminded that violations are subject to penalties under the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

Finally, he elaborated on the entry points for livestock into the country, which include the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complexes at Padang Besar ICQS, Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS in Kedah, and Rantau Panjang ICQS in Kelantan.
