Sibu: Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here came alive early today as a sea of participants dressed in red, yellow, and black gathered for the Sarawak Day Unity Walk 2026, symbolising the unity and camaraderie among Sarawakians from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, more than 10,000 participants from all walks of life set off together along the route through the heart of Sibu, with Sarawak flags fluttering, patriotic songs filling the air, and chants of 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' adding to the festive atmosphere. Sarawak Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who was accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, flagged off the participants.
Also present were Sarawak Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin; Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah; as well as several other ministers, deputy ministers, elected representatives, and community leaders.
Along the nearly five-kilometre route, which passed through Jalan Kampung Datu, Jalan Kampung Hilir, the Simpang 3 Roundabout, Jalan Awang Ramli Amit, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg before returning to Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, participants from various ethnic communities, including Malays, Melanau, Iban, Bidayuh, Chinese, and Orang Ulu, walked side by side while waving the Jalur Gemilang and the Sarawak flag.
Many took part with their families, including senior citizens, youths, and children, making the programme an occasion to strengthen community bonds while fostering the spirit of patriotism in conjunction with Sarawak Day.
After the walk, Wan Junaidi and his entourage visited the Sarawak Day 2026 History Exhibition, which traced Sarawak's journey towards self-government, before having refreshments at Sibu Kitchen. The highlight of the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration continues tonight with the Sarawak Day Assembly and People's Concert at the same venue, which is scheduled to be officiated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
