Kuala lumpur: A total of 2,384 offences were recorded using drones during the three-day implementation of Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) 2026 which began on March 16. Road Transport Department (JPJ) Enforcement senior director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan highlighted that the primary offences identified included overtaking on double lanes, not obeying traffic lights, overtaking on the left, and using emergency lanes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, every offence recorded will serve as evidence, and JPJ will issue an interview notice to the vehicle owners involved. Datuk Muhammad Kifli mentioned that drone technology can detect up to 200 traffic offences in just 45 minutes, underscoring its effectiveness in enforcement operations. Currently, JPJ operates six drone units at its headquarters and plans to expand their use in future operations.
The use of drones is not aimed at finding road user offences but as a proactive measure to record and identify offences that lead to accidents. This approach emphasizes safety by ensuring road users are more disciplined and law-abiding. A review of the JPJ database identified 288 hotspots nationwide based on high accident rates and traffic offences, with Kelantan, Sarawak, and Perak recording the highest numbers.
In Kelantan, the most notable offences involved queue cutting and traffic light violations, all under the Road Transport Act 1987. Users receiving notices can make a compound payment within 15 days to receive a 50 per cent discount, reducing the total to RM150. JPJ emphasized that high-capacity drones with a zoom function of up to 200 times enable clear identification of vehicle registration numbers from a long distance.
