Op Loging: Kelantan Customs Seize Smuggled Cigarettes Worth More Than RM300,000

Kota bharu: The Kelantan Customs Department detained 10 individuals and seized various types of smuggled cigarettes worth RM315,708 during Operation Loging conducted in several areas in the state.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Director of the Kelantan Customs Department, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, stated that the operation was carried out by the state Enforcement Branch Operations Team. It spanned from November 10 to 13 and involved raids in 16 different locations.

The inspections led to the seizure of smuggled cigarettes valued at RM73,062.36, with estimated duties and taxes amounting to RM242,646.39, bringing the total value of the seizure to RM315,708.75. Wan Jamal explained that the syndicate responsible for the smuggling is suspected of concealing the cigarettes behind counters, in hidden storage spaces, and in abandoned houses before distributing them to customers.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Offenders, if convicted, face severe penalties, including fines ranging from 10 to 20 times the value of the goods or between RM100,000 to RM500,000. Additionally, they could face imprisonment for up to five years, or both, for a first offence.

Wan Jamal also called on the public to collaborate in the fight against smuggling activities, such as cigarettes, liquor, firecrackers, drugs, and vehicles. He emphasized that these illicit activities not only result in significant losses to national revenue but also pose threats to the safety and well-being of the community.

He encouraged the public to report any information related to smuggling through the Customs Toll-Free Line 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest customs office, assuring that the identity of informants would be kept confidential.
