Johor bahru: The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) has reported a total of 5,944 online scam cases as of April, as stated by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. The reports include 2,566 cases of e-commerce fraud and 1,369 telecommunication scams, with the remainder involving non-existent loan and investment schemes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, NSRC data shows these reports were received through their 997 hotline during the first four months of the year. Teo noted that the number of reports suggests that people are increasingly aware of the hotline's existence to aid scam victims. However, she emphasized that the figures also indicate a significant number of scam victims, highlighting the need for greater awareness and digital literacy.

Teo shared these insights during the Safe Internet Campaign Community Carnival at Hutan Bandar Putra. She announced plans to expand the campaign to nine other districts in Johor, following its initial launch in Kulai. The campaign is scheduled to be held in Kluang, Muar, Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Segamat, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Tangkak, and Johor Bahru, with the final event on December 19.

Initially launched in 2025, the Safe Internet Campaign focused on educational institutions. However, the current year's initiative aims to involve the broader community, including parents and senior citizens, to spread essential knowledge about safe internet practices.
